Saudi Arabia severs diplomatic ties with Iran

  1. Saudi Arabia says it has severed diplomatic relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran. Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir said the Kingdom has asked Iranian diplomats to leave Saudi Arabia within 48 hours. Riyadh says the decision came after an attack on its embassy in Tehran.
  2. The Leader of the Islamic Revolution has strongly condemned Saudi Arabia's execution of outstanding Shia cleric Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr. Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei described the killing as a political mistake and said Riyadh should await divine retribution for the crime.
  3. Tens of thousands have participated in protest rallies worldwide against Saudi Arabia’s execution of Sheikh Nimr. Protesters took to the streets of the Iranian capital Tehran to condemn the killing and Riyadh’s crackdown. Similar protests were held in Iraq and Pakistan. Protests in Bahrain and the Indian-controlled Kashmir also turned violent.
  4. The United Nations rights chief has expressed regret over Saudi Arabia's executing 47 people in a single day. Zeid Raad al-Hussein says the executions were a very disturbing development as some of those sentenced to death were accused of non-violent crimes. He also questioned the legality of their proceedings.
  5. A coalition of Kurdish and Arab fighters has killed 16 Daesh terrorists following days of intense fighting in northern Syria. A monitoring group says the offensives came in response to a Daesh attack on a town near Raqqah. Nearly two dozen Kurdish fighters were killed in the fighting.
  6. Reports say the Turkish parliament is set to consider lifting the immunity of two pro-Kurdish HDP leaders. Selahattin Demirtash and Figen Yuk-sek-dag were accused of treason after they called for Kurdish self-rule in Turkey’s southeast. The Turkish president says the two opposition leaders have committed a constitutional crime.
  7. India’s consulate in Afghanistan’s northern province of Balkh has come under militant attack. Afghan Officials have reported gunfire and explosions near the Indian mission in the city of Mazar-i-Sharif. Fighting is reportedly underway in and around the building. There has been no word on possible casualties.
