India Consulate in Afghanistan’s Mazar-e Sharif attacked

Afghan security forces watch a house burn at the site of a clash between militants and security forces at the Indian Consulate in Herat in Afghanistan on May 23, 2014.

Gunmen have attacked the Indian Consulate in Afghanistan’s northern city of Mazar-e Sharif, officials say.

"We are being attacked. Fighting is going on," an Indian Consulate official said on Sunday.

The Indian diplomatic mission came under attack with a number of gunmen trying to break into the building.

A spokesman for the Mazar-e Sharif's governor said that twin explosions and shots were heard at the scene of the attack.

It was not immediately clear if there was any casualty among the Consulate staff. No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.

India’s diplomatic missions have been attacked by militants for several times. The Indian embassy in Kabul was stormed in 2008 and 2009 and dozens were killed in the two attacks.

In May 2014, the Indian consulate in Herat was attacked by unknown gunmen. Similar incident happened to the Indian consulate in Jalalabad in August 2013, when nine civilians, including seven children, were killed.

The Sunday attack came only days after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid a visit to Kabul and inaugurated the Indian-built parliament building in Afghanistan.

During his inauguration speech, Modi referred to Pakistan’s reservations about India’s role in Afghanistan and said, “there are some who do not want us to be here.”
