The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has launched an investigation into a fire outside the US consulate in northern Mexico that resulted in the destruction of several US government vehicles.

"The FBI is working with our federal and host-nation partners in Mexico to investigate an incident at the US Consulate in Tijuana, which resulted in damage to government property,” FBI said.

The fire started early Friday morning behind the consulate’s walls, across the border from San Diego in Tijuana. According to consulate spokeswoman Preeti Shah, four cars were destroyed and another one was partially damaged.

Tijuana firefighters extinguished the blaze. Shah said no one was injured.

A Tijuana official said the Mexican Federal Attorney General’s Office was also investigating the fire. The official added however that no arrests have been made yet.
