Two men of Syrian origin have been busted in Switzerland due to traces of explosives discovered in their vehicle, Swiss authorities say.

Speaking during a press conference on Saturday, Geneva prosecutor Olivier Jornot said the two unnamed men were stopped by police on a road outside Cologny in the canton of Geneva on Friday.

“These people, because of their behavior and nationality, were subject to more careful checks, and these checks revealed traces of explosives in the car they were using,” Jornot said.

He added that the two suspects were arrested on suspicion of “manufacture, concealment and transport of explosives” and of violating Swiss law prohibiting groups like al-Qaeda, Daesh, and similar organizations.

Jornot further said that the men, who had valid Syrian passports and spoke Arabic, were taken into custody on the day they arrived in the European country, adding that the car had at one point been used to transport explosives “but it did not necessarily mean it was the two suspects who did so.”

Further arrests were expected in the coming days amid intensified security in the Swiss city, Geneva prosecutor said.

The arrests were made after the Geneva department of security said in a statement on Thursday that it had raised the alert level in the city of Geneva as Swiss police stepped up the manhunt for suspects of the recent Paris attacks.

According to reports, United Nations security guards have been stationed with MP5 sub-machine guns at entry points for cars to the UN complex in Geneva.

On November 13, Daesh Takfiri terrirists struck at least six different venues in and around the French capital, leaving some 130 people dead and over 350 others wounded.
