Canada alert to Daesh threats against major cities: Minister

Canada’s Public and Safety Minister Ralph Goodale

Canada’s Public and Safety Minister Ralph Goodale says the North American country is “alert” to threats from Takfiri Daesh terrorists against its major cities.

Goodale said on Thursday that Canadian security officials are on alert, following terrorist threats as well as the current security situation in Europe.

His remarks came after Swiss officials launched a manhunt in Geneva for four people believed to have links with Daesh, who have threatened to attack a number of cities. According to local reports, the listed cities are Geneva, Chicago and Toronto.

Other European reports include Ottawa and Vancouver among the possible targets.

Goodale told reporters outside the parliament that the security officials “are examining all information to determine any new fact.”

“Canadian security officials have been alert to the threat of terrorism for a very long time and particularly since the situation in Paris. They have been working with their counterparts in other countries to make sure that we are putting together the best effort that could possibly be done,” Goodale said.

The Canadian minister said he had not received new information regarding the threats. “If there is something new, we will obviously let Canadians know immediately and we will take the appropriate steps.”

The Geneva manhunt was part of the Europe-wide investigations into the Paris attacks of November 13, when assailants struck at least six different venues in and around the French capital, leaving 130 people dead and over 350 others wounded.

The attacks were claimed by Daesh, which is currently carrying out atrocities in parts of Syria and Iraq that are under its control.
