At least eight people have been killed and 30 others injured in a fresh wave of terrorist attacks in and around the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, security and health officials say.

A security source, speaking on condition of anonymity, said a woman and her two children lost their lives when three mortar shells slammed into residential buildings in the Arab Jabour district of southern Baghdad on Friday. The projectiles also left six people injured, Arabic-language al-Baghdadia satellite television network reported.

Earlier in the day, unidentified gunmen, armed with machine guns, attacked a security checkpoint in the same neighborhood, killing a pro-government and anti-al-Qaeda Sahwa fighter and injuring three others.

Separately, two civilians were killed and nine others wounded when a bomb went off close to a popular market in the capital’s western neighborhood of Ghazaliya. A civilian was also killed and six others injured after a roadside bomb exploded in the Sayyidah neighborhood of southern Baghdad.

Additionally, an improvised explosive device exploded close to a commercial district in Baghdad’s northeastern neighborhood of Ur, leaving one person dead and six others injured.

The United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq says a total of 714 Iraqis were killed and another 1,269 wounded in acts of terrorism, violence and armed conflict in October alone. According to the UN mission, the number of civilian fatalities stood at 559. Violence also claimed the lives of 155 members of the Iraqi security forces. A great portion of the fatalities was recorded in Baghdad, where 298 civilians were killed.

The northern and western parts of Iraq have been plagued by violence ever since the Takfiri Daesh terrorist group began an offensive in the Arab country in June 2014. Army soldiers and Popular Mobilization units have joined forces and are seeking to take back militant-held regions in joint operations.
