5 protesters shot near Black Lives Matter encampment

At the 4th Precinct in North Minneapolis, protesters demanded answers over the death of Jamar Clark who was shot and killed by police.

Five protesters have been shot near the Black Lives Matter encampment at the Fourth Precinct police station in the US city of Minneapolis.

The protesters were shot and injured Monday night near the area where unarmed African American Jamar Clark was shot dead last week.

According to Miski Noor, a media contact for Black Lives Matter, “a group of white supremacists” fired their guns during the protest and shot at the demonstrators.

The counterdemonstrators “opened fire on about six protesters” when demonstrators were trying to herd them away from the area, Noor added.

The shooting happened at 10:45 p.m. and the shooters managed to flee the scene. Police have not arrested any suspect.

“I am obviously appalled that white supremacists would open fire on nonviolent, peaceful protesters,” said Nekima Levy-Pounds, president of the Minneapolis chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).

24-year-old Clark was fatally shot by officers Mark Ringgenberg and Dustin Schwarze on Nov. 15.

Clark’s death sparked demonstrations in the city's small but concentrated minority community who called for the release of the video of the incident.

However, authorities have refused to release the footage, saying it is from multiple sources and that making it public would compromise their investigations.

Following the Monday shooting, Eddie Sutton, Jamar’s brother, issued a statement, saying that “in light of tonight’s shootings, the family feels out of imminent concern for the safety of the occupiers, we must get the occupation of the 4th precinct ended and onto the next step.”

Police brutality in the United States has raised nationwide debates amid a string of police killings of unarmed black men that led to the creation of the Black Lives Matter movement.
