Authorities in Kuwait have busted an extremist cell that was sending funds and arms to Daesh Takfiri group.

The Kuwaiti Interior Ministry said on Thursday that six people from different nationalities -- a Lebanese, an Egyptian, a Kuwaiti, and three Syrians -- were arrested, the official Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) reported.

The Lebanese citizen, identified as Osama Khayat, is said to be the ringleader.

He has confessed to recruiting militants for Daesh and raising money that was transferred to Daesh bank accounts in Turkey, KUNA said, adding that Khayat also supplied weapons via Turkey to top Daesh militants operating in Syria.

One of the Syrian detainees was an arms dealer for Daesh while another was in charge of finances and communication, police said.

The ministry, meanwhile, added that two Syrians and two Australian-Lebanese nationals are still on the loose.

The development comes as the Persian Gulf Arab country is ramping up security operations in the face of the militant group's activities in the Middle East.

Earlier this year, a bomb explosion at a Shia mosque in the capital, Kuwait City, left over two dozen people dead and more than 200 others injured. Daesh terrorists claimed responsibility for the attack.

The incident prompted the Kuwaiti government to declare itself at war with the terrorists, saying Daesh aims to sow discord and stoke sectarian strife in Kuwait.

Daesh terrorists, who were initially trained by the CIA in Jordan in 2012 to destabilize the Syrian government, now control parts of Syria and Iraq. They have been engaged in crimes against humanity in the areas under their control.

The terror group has recently claimed responsibility for a deadly plane crash in Egypt and a string of recent attacks in Lebanon and France.
