Iran female wushu athletes shine, collect world gold medals

Iranian female wushu practitioners have shown excellent performances to impress the crowd at the 13th edition of World Wushu Championships in Indonesia, and captured three gold medals in the prestigious sporting event.

On Wednesday, Sedigheh Dariaeivarkadeh recorded impressive victories in her march to the final at the indoor Istora Senayan sporting arena in the Indonesian capital city of Jakarta, and collected the gold medal in the women's 60-kilogram Sanda section after she defeated her Indonesian opponent Moria Manalu.

Shahrbanou Mansourian beat her Filipino opponent Hergie Bacyadan in the final match of women's 65-kilogram category of the Sanda section and won the gold medal.

Maryam Hashemi overpowered her Czech rival Veronika Kohutova in the women's 70-kilogram class of the Sanda section, and was awarded the gold medal.

Earlier in the day, Ja’far Shirzadeh Topraghlou of Iran lost to Chinese athlete Ji Fu Xu, and settled for the bronze medal in the men’s 65-kilogram category of the Sanda section.

Sanda (sometimes called Sanshou or Lei tai) has all the combat aspects of wushu, but includes many more grappling techniques.

The international tournament has brought together some 1,000 male and female wushu practitioners from 82 countries, including Australia, Brazil, China, Chinese Taipei, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, Turkey, the United States and Vietnam.
