US officials say no credible threat has been reported against the country in the wake of coordinated attacks that killed scores of people in the French capital city on Friday night.

"The Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Bureau of Investigation are closely monitoring events in Paris and we are in contact with our counterparts in the region," Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson said in a statement on Friday.

"At this time, we know of no specific or credible threats of an attack on the US homeland of the type that occurred in Paris tonight," Johnson added.

Over 150 people were killed in multiple coordinated attacks on Friday in one of the deadliest assaults to hit the French capital since the World War II.

Officials in New York, Chicago and Philadelphia also said they had received no intelligence indicating any threats. They, however, stepped up patrols and took other security precautions.

CNN quoted two US counterterrorism officials as saying that authorities across the country have convened secure conference calls to try and gather information.

According to a federal law enforcement official, authorities are working with local police agencies around the United States to task sources domestically and internationally for information about any individuals possibly associated with the attacks, CNN reported.

Local police in Los Angeles, Washington and New York City placed units on extra alert at critical sites like airports, theaters and museums.

"We will not hesitate to adjust our security posture, as appropriate, to protect the American people," an FBI spokesperson said in a statement.

"DHS [Department of Homeland Security] and the FBI routinely share information with our state, local, federal and international law enforcement, intelligence and homeland security partners, and continually evaluate the level of protection we provide at federal facilities," read the statement.

Authorities said they also scrutinize known terror suspects across the country as well as boosting surveillance of them.
