Militant mortar attack takes nearly two dozen lives in Syria’s Latakia
Nearly two dozen people have been killed and dozens more injured in a militant attack on a major city in Syria’s northeast.
The Syrian state television said on Tuesday that 22 people were killed in mortar fire that targeted the eastern neighborhoods of the coastal city of Latakia.
The report said 62 people were also injured in the attack. It did not elaborate from where the firing started.
Syria’s official news agency SANA, however, put the death toll from the incident at 16, saying close to 60 others were also wounded.
The attack with such a high casualty figure on the strategic city was unprecedented since a foreign-backed conflict began in Syria in March 2011.
The Britain-based so-called Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said two explosions occurred in Latakia with one of them potentially coming from a planted explosive device. It said 23 people were killed in the attacks.
The last major attack in the city came in September, when a car bombing at Hamam Square killed 10 people, all of them civilians.
A separate attack on Tuesday targeted residential areas in the Syrian capital, Damascus, killing one person and injuring five other people.
More than 250,000 have been killed and hundreds of thousands displaced as a result of the crisis in Syria.
