Three Iranian citizens have reportedly been executed in Saudi Arabia after being convicted of smuggling large amounts of hashish to the kingdom by sea.

The official Saudi Press Agency (SPA) said the death sentences of the Iranians, who had been arrested while allegedly smuggling the drug, were carried out in the city of Dammam, the capital of the country’s Eastern Province, on Sunday.

The sentences, issued following alleged trials at courts, had been endorsed by the kingdom’s Supreme Court as well as King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud.

According to AFP tallies, their cases brought to 145 the number of locals and foreigners executed in the conservative kingdom so far this year, compared with 87 in 2014.

Rights experts have expressed concern about the fairness of trials in the Saudi Arabia.

The execution of the Iranians comes less than two weeks after Saudi prince Abdel Mohsen Bin Walid Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud was arrested with two tonnes of amphetamines, packed in 40 suitcases, which were due to be loaded onto a private jet.
