UK military presence in Bahrain not for peace: Pundit

Press TV has interviewed Scott Rickard, a former American intelligence linguist from Orlando, and Fredrick Peterson, a senior congressional defense adviser from Virginia, to discuss the UK's military presence in the Persian Gulf region.

Rickard says the West is supporting the Bahraini regime, which is similar to the repressive Saudi monarchy, because the small Persian Gulf island kingdom is pursuing the Western financial outset.

He noted that the military presence of the UK and the US in Bahrain “does not contribute to peace at all,” adding that a handful of 'oligarchs' have seized the power in Bahrain and suppressed the majority people who look for democracy.

Western powers have pursued instability and proxy wars in Syria, Yemen and some other nations, the linguist says, saying that the American and British authorities are attempting to add to their interests in the region through the sales of more arms and military equipment to Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia.

Rickard further pointed out that the United States and the United Kingdom have a long history of supporting dictators and even put pressure on journalists who sought to report the Al Khalifa regime’s repression against Bahraini protesters.

Peterson, for his part, believes the UK has a long-term commitment to keep presence in the Persian Gulf region, as the region seems to be very important to the “world’s economy and peace.”

“The presence of another British base in addition to the US presence by itself is not necessarily a favorable or non-favorable development,” he argues, adding that the main question is about the function and actual service of the US and UK bases in the area.
