Vehicles, properties, weapons seized in Mexico hunt for El Chapo
A hunt for notorious Mexican drug kingpin, Joaquin “El Chapo (Shorty)” Guzman, whose July escape from a maximum-security prison made headlines, has led to the seizure of aircraft, trucks, weapons and properties.
The planes were seized in Guzman’s home state of Sinaloa in the northwest, which, together with the central states of Mexico and Puebla, have been subjected to search operations by the authorities, AFP reported on Tuesday.
The operations have also led to the seizure of weapons, drugs, and motorcycles over the past three months.
On July 11, the drug cartel leader fled through a 1.5-kilometer (one-mile)-long tunnel dug under the shower in his cell in Mexico State jail. He was then driven to the central state of Queretaro, from where he was flown to Sinaloa.
Guzman is the leader of the Sinaloa drug cartel, which smuggles huge amounts of illegal drugs into the United States. He busted out of another maximum-security prison in 2001.
Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto had billed his arrest last year as his biggest victory yet in his trademark war on drugs.
Authorities said earlier that they located Guzman in a mountainous area that stretches from Sinaloa into neighboring Durango State, and that he was wounded while escaping during a police raid.
Earlier in the week, judicial officials said Guzman’s brother-in-law, who allegedly supervised and organized the construction of the tunnel, his lawyer, and two pilots were formally held for trial on charges of helping him flee.
