Israeli security forces have prevented the installation of cameras at al-Aqsa Mosque compound in the occupied city of al-Quds (Jerusalem), as part of an agreement previously reached between Israel and Jordan to defuse the tensions in the occupied territories, an Islamic body administering the site says.
According to the Islamic Waqf, a Jordanian trust, Israeli security forces on Monday intervened to stop the work of a team that was installing cameras.
The body said a team was “working on the installation of cameras belonging to the Islamic Waqf... but the Israeli police interfered directly and stopped the work.”
"We severely condemn the Israeli interference into the working affairs of the Waqf, and we consider the matter evidence that Israel wants to install cameras that only serve its own interests, not cameras that show truth and justice," it said in a statement.
Israeli officials had agreed to have 24/7 surveillance at the al-Aqsa Mosque compound, also known as Haram al-Sharif. Jordan’s King Abdullah, who is the custodian of the holy site, said in a meeting with US Secretary of State John Kerry that the move could defuse tensions in the Old City.
Jordan has recognized Israel and has diplomatic ties with it.
The agreement came after weeks of violence in the occupied territories in a bid to quell Palestinian protests over a covert plan by Israel to change the status quo of the holy compound. More than 50 Palestinians have been killed since early October when an Israeli crackdown began over the issue, with most of them being in the occupied West Bank and areas close to the illegal Israeli settlements.
Israeli forces on Monday shot and killed a Palestinian man north of the city of al-Khalil, also known as Hebron, in the occupied West bank.
The Israeli military said the Palestinian man was shot dead after he stabbed a person, believed to be an Israeli soldier in al-Khalil.
Also on Sunday, a Palestinian girl was shot dead in the same city on similar allegations. The flare-up in violence has also claimed the lives of at least ten Israeli soldier and settlers.
