  1. The Palestinian president has called for international action to stop Israeli settlers’ terrorist acts in the occupied territories. Mahmoud Abbas also demanded protection against Israel’s extrajudicial executions and home demolitions. He rejected the idea of splitting the al-Aqsa compound into Jewish and Muslim sections.

  2. Russia says Moscow and Tehran have agreed to boost cooperation to restore security to the Middle East. The issue was discussed over the phone between the two countries’ foreign ministers. It came a day after a meeting between Russia, the U-S, Turkey and Saudi Arabia over the Syria crisis.

  3. Turkey accuses Kurdish groups of trying to grab control of northern Syria, saying it wouldn't allow this to happen. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has slammed the Kurds for merging the Syrian town of Tal Abyad into the autonomous Kurdish region. Syrian Kurdish fighters have denied the accusations.

  4. Afghan forces have driven Taliban militants out of the Ghormach district in Faryab province after three days of air and ground strikes. The militants overrun the northwestern region on October 18 and killed the district police chief and 12 other officers.

  5. Millions of Shia Muslims in Iran have marked the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein, the grandson of Prophet Mohammad. Cities across the country were the scene of an outpouring of grief on the Day of Ashura, which marks the climax of Muharram.

  6. Also in other parts of the world, Muslim mourners have held ceremonies to mark the Day of Ashura. Millions of people in Iraq, Lebanon, India and Britain have observed the mourning rituals.

  7. Hurricane Patricia has been downgraded to a tropical storm after it slammed through Mexico’s west coast as a record-breaking hurricane. It lost force while moving inland across Mexico. Patricia is now heading towards Texas.

  8. Bulgaria, Serbia and Romania have warned that they will close their borders if Germany and Austria do so, as part of measures to deal with an ongoing refugee influx. The trio said they won't allow the Balkan region to turn into a buffer zone for stranded asylum seekers.
