A bomb attack has rocked the main Shia site in the Bangladeshi capital city of Dhaka, leaving at least one person dead and dozens of others wounded.

The incident occurred at about 2:00 a.m. local time on Saturday (2000 GMT on Friday) at Hussaini Dalan, the most important prayer and congregation site for Bangladesh’s minority Shia community in the old Mughal quarter of Dhaka, according to police.

Police further said the casualties came after three bombs were thrown outside Hussaini Dalan, where thousands of people had gathered to commemorate Ashura, the anniversary of the martyrdom of Imam Hussein, the third Shia Imam.

“There were some 20,000 people in and outside the building at that time. They were preparing to hold the annual Muharram mourning procession,” Mofiz Uddin Ahmed, deputy commissioner of Dhaka police, told AFP.

Meanwhile, Azizul Haq, a local police chief, said at least one person lost his life and approximately 80 other were injured in the bomb attack.

“We’ve recovered two unexploded bombs. These are like explosive devices and almost like grenades and fitted with batteries,” Haq added.

Police inspector Mozammel Hoque also said that most of the victims were hit by bomb splinters, but none of them was in critical condition.

“Some 50 were brought to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital. A 14-year-old boy was brought in dead. He died due to the explosion,” he added.

Over the past two years, militant groups have targeted Muslims, Hindus and Christians in the South Asian state.

The bombing came just weeks after an Italian aid worker and a Japanese farmer were shot dead in Bangladesh. The attacks were both claimed by the Takfiri Daesh terrorist group.
