Iran, Syria, Russia acting in coordination against Daesh: Deputy FM

Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, the Iranian deputy foreign minister for Arab and African affairs

A senior Iranian official says Iran, Russia and Syria are operating in tandem to tackle Daesh Takfiri terrorists who are wreaking havoc in the Arab country.

“We enjoy coordination with Syria and Russia in the fight against Daesh,” Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, the Iranian deputy foreign minister for Arab and African affairs, said at the European Council on Foreign Relations in London on Tuesday.

He rejected claims that Iran’s cooperation with Russia is limited to the Syria crisis, stressing that Tehran maintains “strategic” relations with Moscow.

“Tehran-Moscow relations are robust and strategic and the Islamic Republic of Iran seeks similar ties with European countries as well as with its neighbors,” Amir-Abdollahian said, stressing that the promotion of ties with neighbors is a central plank of Iran’s foreign policy.

He once again rejected claims that Iran has dispatched ground troops to Syria, stressing that the Islamic Republic only provides military consultations to the Damascus government in its fight against terrorism.

Iranian military advisors are present in Syria to help the Arab country in the fight against terrorism, the official said, adding that Iran has increased the number of its advisors in Syria over the past few days.

Last week, Syrian Information Minister Omran al-Zoubi also dismissed allegations of Iran’s military presence in the Arab country, saying the Islamic Republic only provides military consultations to the Damascus government.

Syria has been plagued by a foreign-backed militancy since March 2011. According to the UN, more than 250,000 Syrians have lost their lives in the crisis while millions have also been displaced.

Since September 30, Russia has been pounding positions of Daesh and those of other terrorist groups in Syria upon a request by the Damascus government.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Amir-Abdollahian said that Iran has been seeking the restoration of peace and security as well as free elections in the Arab country.
