US policy in fighting terror in Syria deceptive: Analyst

Press TV has interviewed George Jabour, president of Syrian UN Associations in Damascus, to discuss the remarks made by Syria’s parliament speaker, saying the achievements of the country’s armed forces together with the Russian Air Force over the past two weeks in the campaign against terrorists outweigh what the US and its allies achieved over the course of the past year.

The following is a rough transcription of the interview.

Press TV: An interesting comparison made by Mohammad Jihad al-Laham. He says that what the Russian air force in cooperation with Syrian armed forces has done in two weeks exceeds what the United Sates and their allies have achieved over the course of the past year. Talk to us more about that comparison. Why do you think they have achieved more than the United States?

Jabour: Well it is a very much valid comparison. The United States has been trying to tackle the situation within one year but the achievement was that of the Syrian army with the support of the Russian air force. This support enabled the Syrian army to liberate many parts of northern Syria and central Syria.

The difference between the American participation in the fight against terrorism and the Russian participation is quite clear. The Americans are not really working to target the terrorists. The Americans are doing what they are doing in order to justify their inaction in fighting terrorism and in order to support really what they call the moderate armed opposition as if there is a moderate opposition which is armed. Any opposition which is armed is a terrorist group. This is something axiomatic in political science, axiomatic in the affairs of any state.

So Mr. Jihad al-Laham was quite right in saying that the Russians were more serious and they have achieved in 15 days much more than what the Americans achieved within one year.

Press TV: Mr. al-Laham also spoke of Washington’s deceptive policies in the international arena. Do you think he was alluding to the inconsistency that the United States and its so-called coalition has with regards to battling terrorism?

Jabour: Yes that is right. The United States policy really has been either very naïve or very deceptive. I do not think that a great power like the United States can be so naïve but then it is very deceptive in the sense that they claim that they are fighting terrorism, at the same time their allies are the ones who support terrorism by money, by men and by recruitment and by arms.

So I suppose that what Mr. al-Laham said in this international parliamentary conference is very important and it has to be taken literally. As a matter of fact, what I would like to say is that Syrian parliamentary diplomacy has been very active in recent years and months especially with this chairperson, Mr. al-Laham. He is [loyal] and he knows how to turn the case.
