Senior Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh says Palestinians in the besieged Gaza Strip support the Intifada (uprising) in East al-Quds (Jerusalem) against Israel.
According to the Palestinian media reports, at least 33 Palestinians and several Israelis have been killed in clashes over the past two weeks. Israeli forces also imposed more restrictions on Palestinians’ movement in East al-Quds on Thursday, blocking the entrance to several Palestinian neighborhoods and setting up more roadblocks.
The recent deadly tensions between the Tel Aviv regime and Palestinians were triggered by Israel’s imposition of sweeping restrictions on entries into the al-Aqsa Mosque compound in East al-Quds on August 26 and Israeli settlers’ repeated attacks on the mosque. Palestinians are furious at the settlers’ violence and a plan by Israel to change the status quo of the al-Aqsa Mosque, which is Islam’s third holiest site after Masjid al-Haram in Mecca and Masjid al-Nabawi in Medina. The al-Aqsa mosque is also revered by Jews and Christians.
