Press TV has interviewed Mark Glenn, a political commentator in Idaho, to discuss Russia’s ongoing campaign of airstrikes against Daesh positions inside Syria.

Following is a rough transcription.

Press TV: It definitely seems that the Russians are being effective in their airstrikes against Daesh. Of course, they have said that they will not send ground troops, getting a lot of negative reaction though out of Washington and its allies. Why do you think that is the case? If, according to the United States, the goal is to stop Daesh, to stop these terrorists, then why wouldn’t they be more supportive? Not only be more supportive but actually coordinating strikes at the same time with the Russian federation.

Glenn: Well, why would the United States be engaged in any kind of operation with the coalition or otherwise to destroy the very same terrorists that they created in the first place? The West and Israel are so upset with the person of Vladimir Putin right now, because he basically has ripped the face off of the entire operation and exposed it for the fraud that it is, literally within just a few hours.

What the Russians were able to accomplish, just the few hours of very limited amount of military resources, has made monkeys out of the United States and the West and all of their other partners involved in this, over the course of the last year. What they claimed be attempting to do. So I think that what we see here is a case of ‘Jesus driving the money traders out of the temple,’ as we read about in the various Christian gospels and the crooks and the thieves and the gangsters are quite angry of this and are looking for what their next move is going to be in remitting the situation to their satisfaction.

Press TV: Do you think that the United States has been surprised by Putin’s move and being very aggressive with this that he said it is a matter of security, not only for the region but also for Russia itself. Do you think it is kind of taking them of guard?

Glenn: Yes, I do. I think that if we look at the entire posture that the Russians maintained, at least with regards to Syria now since the beginning, they have send a series of very confusing signals to the West that basically I think was a chess maneuver on their part, designed to go at the West and to exposing themselves in the way that they have, so then Russia couldn’t make a play on the Chessboard and capture a piece as important as world opinion; cause that is what is really at stake here.

What we see is a checkmate taking place where the Russians, working alongside Syrians and Iranians and Hezbollah, are going to raise their standing, not just in the Middle East but throughout the world and at the same time, they are going to drag the United States, and the West and Israel down into the sewer where they belong in terms of world opinion.

As far as sending Russian ground troops, I think that this is completely consistent with the Russians have planned… They need to make hero out of Assad. They need to have him come out of this thing as the victor, so that the Russians will then be able to build a much larger coalition in the Middle East, using Assad as basically the hero of the Arab people who, effectively working with the Russians, was able to defeat the West.
