A fleet of Chinese warships, including a missile destroyer, a missile frigate and a replenishment ship have paid port visits to Europe’s Scandinavian nations in a show of goodwill and naval interest in the region.

The visit to northern European countries of Denmark, Finland and Sweden by Fleet 152 of the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) came as part of its “round-the-globe voyage” following the conclusion of  a four-month anti-piracy mission in the Gulf of Aden, China’s defense ministry announced, as cited in a Saturday report by Japan-based online magazine The Diplomat.

According to the report, the stops at the European ports by the Chinese naval fleet, led by the guided-missile destroyer Jinan, followed two earlier stops in the African countries of Sudan and Egypt.

The fleet, the report added, currently remains in Sweden after arriving there on September 30 for a five-day port visit.

Providing further details about the Chinese naval fleet, the UK-based IHS Jane’s Navy International identified the three PLAN warships as “the Type 052C Luyang II-class guided-missile destroyer Jinan (152), the Type 054A Jiangkai II-class guided-missile frigate Yiyang (548), and the Type 903 Fuchi-class replenishment ship Qiandao Hu (886).”

Jinan and Yiyang, according to the report, are among China’s most modern ships that were completed in late 2014. This is while the Qiandao was commissioned in 2004.

Meanwhile, the fleet’s commander Wang Jianxun was cited as saying in the report that the battle ships will be open to the public, and the Chinese naval forces and their Swedish counterparts will be visiting each other.
