British teen jailed for inciting terrorist attacks in Melbourne

Boy pleaded guilty in July to sending messages online encouraging attack on Australian police.

A British teenager has been sentenced to at least five years in jail for a terrorist plot to kill police officers in Australia.

The 15-year-old pleaded guilty to inciting an attack at this year's war memorial parade in Melbourne. His name has not been made public because of his age.

Boy, 15, is youngest person to be found guilty of terrorism in Britain.

The boy was handed down a life sentence with a minimum term of five year. High Court Judge of the Queen's Bench Division, John Saunders said in his ruling that the teenager would released only if he is found no longer a danger to the public.

Justice Saunders said it was chilling that someone so young could have become so radicalized. "Thanks to the intervention of the police in this country and in Australia, that attack and the deaths which were intended to follow never happened," he said.

Sevdet Besim was arrested at his Hallam home, in Melbourne's south-east.

According to prosecutors, the boy planned the ISIL-inspired attack from his home in Blackburn, northwestern England. He is accused of sending thousands of online messages to 18-year-old Australian Sevdet Besim, detailing him how to plot against Australian police officers during the parade. The boy was allegedly introduced to Besim by another Australian Abu Khaled al-Cambodi who had joined the terrorist group in Syria.

The British teenager, who was arrested in April, has become one of the country's youngest convicted terrorists. Besim who was one of the five teenagers arrested by police in Australia is also awaiting his trial there.
