An Egyptian court has sentenced at least seven anti-government protesters to death after charging them with acts of violence or terrorism, Press TV reports.

On Thursday, the court in Banha, Nile Delta province of Qalyoubia north of the capital, Cairo, handed down the execution sentences to seven of the Muslim Brotherhood members.

The defendants were charged with inciting violence in the Khankah district of Qalyoubia during anti-government protests.

The court presided by judge Mokhtar Shalaby has sent the papers of the defendants to the grand mufti of Egypt, and now awaits his non-binding opinion.

In a separate development, a military court in Alexandria sentenced six anti-government protesters to jail terms, ranging from three to 10 years, over their alleged involvement in the torching of a police outpost in the city. Among the defendants were two juveniles who received three-year jail terms each.

On September 28, a court in Alexandria upheld death sentences for three dissidents, and handed down jail terms to nearly 70 other activists ranging from 10 to 25 years.

The Egyptian government has criminalized street protests, sentenced hundreds to death in mass trials and imprisoned thousands of political opponents and their supporters.

Mohamed Morsi of the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood, who was the country's first democratically-elected president, was toppled by the military under the leadership of then head of the armed force Abdul Fattah el-Sisi in July 2013.

The military-backed government has overseen a crackdown targeting the Brotherhood supporters and other critics. The clampdown on Brotherhood backers has reportedly left over 1,400 people dead.
