Zarif, Obama shake hands in New York
Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and US President Barack Obama have shaken hands at the United Nations (UN)’s headquarters in New York.
The encounter came as Zarif, who was leaving the UN headquarters following President Hassan Rouhani’s speech to the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on Monday, came across Obama and US Secretary of State John Kerry in the corridors, according to IRNA.
An informed source close to the Iranian delegation in New York said that the encounter was not pre-planned.
Zarif is in New York to attend the 70th Session of the UN General Assembly.
Historic conversation
In 2013, President Rouhani and President Obama held a telephone conversation as the Iranian president was wrapping up his visit to New York for the 68th annual session of the UNGA.
Rouhani received the call from Obama as he was in a car heading to the John F. Kennedy International Airport to fly back to the Iranian capital, Tehran.
The phone conversation was the first direct communication between Iranian and US presidents since Iran’s Islamic Revolution of 1979.
