An American sailor has died of gunshot wounds in Bahrain after a shooting incident described by the Navy as “non-hostile.”
The Navy said in a statement on Monday that the sailor was pronounced dead early Sunday morning, the Associated Press reported.
The sailor was shot aboard the USS Gladiator, when it was in port at the US Navy base in Bahrain.
The navy said it will not release the identity of the sailor until after notification of his family. It has also launched an investigation into the circumstances of the incident.
According to the US 5th Fleet spokesman, Cmdr. Kevin Stephens, there are no indications of foul play.
The USS Gladiator, an Avenger-class mine countermeasures ship, is assigned to the US Navy’s 5th Fleet.
The United States has a naval base in the Persian Gulf kingdom of Bahrain. The Naval Support Activity Bahrain (or NSA Bahrain) is home to US Naval Forces Central Command and the United States Fifth Fleet.
