Iran shuts down key refinery for faults

Iran said on Saturday it had shut down a major refinery as a result of technical failures.

Iran said on Saturday it had shut down its Shazand refinery in Arak province as a result of technical failures that had disrupted its performance over the past few days.

This followed a fatal incident at the refinery on September 16 when a laborer was killed after he was hit by a lift truck and a trailer on the refinery’s premises. The death raised the number of persons killed at the refinery to six over the past year. At least 19 others have also been wounded.

Shazand refinery has experienced various incidents in recent months.

In May, at least five people were injured in a gas leakage incident at the refinery.

The refinery’s RFCC unit went offline several times due to technical problems last year. During the downtime, the refinery’s Euro 4 gasoline production was decreased by 8-9 million liters per day and was nearly halved, Cihan and Trend news agencies reported.

Shazand is Iran’s largest gasoline production unit, meeting euro-4 standards. It supplies gasoline to several big cities, including capital Tehran.

The refinery also produces half of Iran’s total gas oil production at 12 million liters per day.
