A militant attack on a police checkpoint in southern Afghanistan has claimed the lives of at least eight policemen, local officials say.

Mohmand Nasratyar, a district administrative chief, said on Saturday that the police personnel were found dead late Friday night inside their checkpoint in the Arghandab district of southern Zabul Province.

Nasratyar said that the government has dispatched a delegation to the troubled region to investigate the incident.

Taliban spokesman Qari Yusuf Ahmadi said the militant group claims responsibility for the attack.

Nearly 40 security personnel have been killed across the country’s volatile south since the beginning of August.

Also on Wednesday, a car bombing targeted the office of a district governor on the outskirts of the Afghan capital, killing at least four people. The incident occurred when the attacker rammed his explosives-laden vehicle into the building located in the Paghman district, west of Kabul. The fatalities included the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) chief for the district.

Taliban militants have stepped up their attacks against Afghan government and foreign targets across Afghanistan in recent months.

Afghanistan is gripped by insecurity nearly 14 years after the United States and its allies attacked the country in 2001 as part of Washington’s so-called war on terror. Although the attack overthrew the Taliban, many areas across Afghanistan still face violence and insecurity.
