Israel re-arrests Palestinian hunger striker Allan
The Israeli regime has reinstated the administrative detention of Palestinian prisoner Mohammed Allan who has recently been on a two-month hunger strike.
"Mohammed Allan, whose condition has improved, was arrested this morning by police at the hospital in Ashkelon," Israeli police spokeswoman Luba Samri said in a Wednesday statement. The 31-year-old lawyer has been taken to the Ramla prison hospital.
His re-arrest comes as Allan’s two-month strike nearly killed him and led to a rise in tensions in the occupied West Bank.
Allan’s lawyer Jamil al-Khatib announced later that the Palestinian detainee restarted a hunger strike after his internment without trial was reinstated. "He is currently on hunger strike," the lawyer stated.
On August 19, Israel's High Court suspended Allan’s detention without trial, which was to run until early November, as he received medical treatment following his strike, that twice left him in a coma.
The Palestinian prisoner, who is a member of the Islamic Jihad movement, had previously said he would resume his hunger strike if his administrative detention was reinstated.
According to his father, Abu Mutheer Allan, the Palestinian inmate believed he would be transferred to a hospital in the city of Nablus, near where he is from.
"My son told me that he doesn't trust them (the Israelis) and if they break their promise to him, he will resume his hunger strike immediately," he said.
The so-called administrative detention is a manner of imprisonment without trial or charge that allows Israel to incarcerate Palestinians for up to six months. The detention order can be renewed for indefinite periods of time.
Palestinians in Israeli jails regularly go on hunger strike in protest against both the unfair administrative detention policy as well as the harsh prison conditions in Israeli jails.
Israeli human group B'tselem says 370 Palestinian inmates were being held in administrative detention at the end of June.
Allan was previously put behind bars from 2006 to 2009.
