Sudan summons British ambassador over bad press

British Ambassador to Sudan Michael Aron

Sudan has summoned the British ambassador to the country for depicting Sudan's foreign debts and the situation in the western Darfur region "in a negative way."

Sudan’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Thursday that it conveyed to Michael Aron its "deep dissatisfaction" about an interview he gave to a local newspaper this week.

Aron had given an interview last month to the political daily al-Mijhar al-Siyasi that was published on Monday.

In the interview, he discussed Sudan's foreign debts and the situation in Darfur among other topics.

Aron "expressed his deep regret and apologized for the comments attributed to him,” the Sudanese Foreign Ministry statement added.

Following the statement, a spokesman for the British embassy in Khartoum said, "We were clear that while our comments were not intended to cause offense, Sudan is currently facing some critical challenges."

Britain "looks forward to working with the government and people of Sudan towards the peaceful resolution of its problems,” the spokesman added.

Aron took over as the British ambassador to Sudan in mid-August.

Darfur has been the scene of deadly violence since 2003, when rebels took up arms against the central government in Khartoum. There has been also tribal fighting in the region.

The United Nations estimates that the violence in Darfur has so far killed over 300,000 people and displaced around 2.5 million others.
