Thousands more of Syrian refugees to head towards Europe: UN

The UN Special Envoy to Syria Staffan de Mistura

The UN special envoy to Syria says many thousands more will flee Daesh terrorists to Europe unless peace returns to the crisis-stricken country.

"Why are people leaving? Because they have lost hope after five years of endless conflict and they see only one winner, Daesh," Staffan de Mistura told reporters in Brussels on Monday.

"It is time to find a solution ... otherwise there will not be any Syrians left," De Mistura warned.

Europe is dealing with an unprecedented influx of refugees, mainly coming from conflict-stricken countries like Syria, Iraq, and Afghanistan. According to De Mistura, around one million people in western Syria are currently in danger. Such a large number could potentially engorge the flood of asylum seekers converging on the EU.

Multiple political attempts have been made by the international community to reach a solution for the conflict in Syria that has reportedly claimed the lives of over 250,000 and displaced some 11 million more since March 2011. All their attempts have failed so far.

"There is no more time for such lengthy political processes," he said.

The special UN envoy noted that the Takfiri militant group’s presence in the region should be worrying everybody and “should make everyone wake up.”

The United Nations estimates over 350,000 people have left the Middle East and North Africa for Europe this year, but around 2,800 people have died during their dangerous voyages across the Mediterranean in rickety boats.
