At least 11 Iraqi pilgrims have been killed after their bus overturned on a road in the western Iranian province of Hamadan, the head of the provincial road traffic police says.

Mehdi Shakeri added that at least 25 others were also injured in the accident that took place on Malayer-Boroujerd road on Sunday night, IRNA reported.

He said the injured were transported to three hospitals in the city of Malayer.

Shakeri added that the Iraqis were coming from a pilgrimage to the Iranian holy city of Qom and were heading to the Mehran border in west of Iran to enter Iraq’s territory when the accident happened.

The police official said rainfall, high speed and the slippery road are to blame for the accident and noted that investigations are underway to determine the exact cause of the incident.

The incident occurred a few months after 25 Iraqi tourists were killed and 13 others injured when their bus plunged into a valley in a mountainous road in northern Iran.

The accident took place on a road linking the city of Karaj in north-central Alborz Province to the city of Chalus in the northern province of Mazandaran on June 2.
