News in Brief

1. At least eight people including women and children have been killed after Saudi warplanes bombed the camps of internally displaced Yemenis in Kitaf district of Sa'ada province. Earlier, Saudi jet fighters targeted an orphanage in the Sofan neighborhood of the capital Sana’a, killing at least eight people and injuring 4 others.

2. Thousands of refugees have arrived at the Austrian border. Hungary has dispatched about one hundred buses to take the desperate refugees to Austria. They'd been stranded for days in the Hungarian capital. Austria says it has agreed with Germany to grant unhindered entry to the refugees.

3. More than 100,000 people have signed a petition, urging Britain to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for war crimes against Palestinians during his upcoming visit to London. The number of signatures is enough for a parliamentary debate on the issue.

4. The Israeli whistle blower, who spent nearly two decades in jail, for exposing Tel Aviv’s nuclear weapons program, has defended his decision to leak the information. Mordechai Vanunu says he revealed the data to inform the Middle East and the world, because he was horrified at the danger posed by Israel's nuclear activities.

5. Eight Palestinian prisoners held in Israel continue their hunger strike in protest at their detention without charge or trial. Palestine’s Committee for Prisoners’ Affairs says some of the inmates have even stopped drinking water. They've been refusing to eat since August 20.

6. Iran’s Air Force has launched large-scale drills in the central province of Isfahan. Various military aircraft including fighter jets, cargo planes, drones and reconnaissance aircraft will be used in the two-day exercises. Officials say the Air Force will conduct reconnaissance missions, attack air and ground targets, and practice civil defense tactics.

7. Iran and Kyrgyzstan have agreed on the need for more cooperation in the fight against terrorism, violence and extremism in the region. Iranian President Hassan Rouhani says he and his Kyrgyz counterpart Almazbek Atambayev agree that the two countries should have closer intelligence and political cooperation to achieve that goal.

8. Civil campaigners in Lebanon have called for nationwide protests over the ongoing rubbish crisis. Organizers of the campaign dubbed "You Stink” say that Lebanese politicians are too corrupt to function. Huge amounts of garbage have piled up in Beirut as a result of the crisis.
