An exchange of fire between a machine gun-toting attacker and police officers in eastern Saudi Arabia has claimed the lives of a policeman and the gunman.

The incident took place in the Abqaiq region of the Eastern Province on Friday after the assailant tried to infiltrate a site belonging to security forces, the official Saudi Press Agency quoted an Interior Ministry spokesman as saying.

Approached by policemen, the attacker, named as Nawaf al-Otaibi, ran away and started to fire, prompting the officers to respond. The shootout also wounded two more policemen.

Saudi officials have launched an investigation into the incident and the assailant’s motives.

On August 23, at least one Saudi police officer sustained injuries when unidentified armed men fired shots at a security patrol in the kingdom’s western coastal city of Jeddah.

On August 6, at least 15 people, including 12 policemen, were killed and many others wounded after a bomb attack targeted a mosque used by Saudi special forces in the country’s southwestern region of Asir.

The Takfiri Daesh terror group’s affiliate in Saudi Arabia claimed responsibility for the deadly assault.

This comes as Saudi Arabia is known as a major supporter of Daesh terror group.
