Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir plans to travel to China to take part in celebrations commemorating the end of World War II.

"President Bashir will travel to China tomorrow on a visit lasting four days," foreign ministry spokesman Ali al-Sadeq told reporters on Sunday.

China is the largest foreign investor in the African country, before the South Sudan’s secession in 2011 was Sudan’s biggest oil importer.

During his visit to China, the Sudanese president is expected to witness the signing of a number of memorandums of understanding and agreements between the two countries on economic cooperation and investment.

Bashir is also expected to talk to Chinese officials about Khartoum’s $10 billion debt to Beijing and seek assistance from China for his cash-strapped country.

Local media quoted Sudan's Transport and Roads minister Makkawi Mohammed Ahmed  as saying that China plans to build a new 1000-km railway in eastern Sudan.

Ahmed also reflected Khartoum’s interest in purchasing ships and airplanes from the far-east country.

Bashir last traveled to China in 2011.
