Significance of giving Zakat in Islam

Zakat is considered to be an essential part of Islamic practice. In the holy Qur'an, it is mentioned with prayers. 

The perception of zakat is that it is a voluntary act, but there is also a strong strand of opinion which suggests that it is compulsory.

But there is no doubt that it plays an important part in the Islamic framework. So, why is Zakat so significant in Islam?
