A Ukrainian sniper has reportedly shot dead a civilian woman in the suburbs of the eastern city of Donetsk, in the latest violation of a shaky ceasefire between Kiev and pro-Russia forces.

"A civilian of the village of Trudovskiye in the Petrovsky District was killed by a shot from a VSU (Ukraine armed forces) sniper. The injured woman died on the spot. The bullet hit her head," the Donetsk News Agency quoted Maxim Zhukovsky, the administration chief of Petrovsky District, as saying on Wednesday.

Zhukovsky added that the elderly woman was near her home at the time of the attack.

The Petrovsky district in the western outskirts of Donetsk has been a hotspot, constantly under fire from the Kiev forces.

Meanwhile, a Ukraine military source said on Thursday seven Ukrainian soldiers have been killed and over a dozen others wounded in clashes between Kiev army troops and pro-Russia forces over the past 24 hours.

Military spokesman Oleksander Motuzyanyk said the fatalities were the highest daily losses for the Ukrainian army since mid-July.

In recent weeks, the ceasefire has repeatedly been violated with the number of reports on shelling and civilian deaths increasing.

The pro-Russia forces in Donetsk and Luhansk areas have repeatedly complained that the onus of the February 15 ceasefire, known as Minsk II, was solely on the Ukrainian side to stick to it.

Shelling of residential areas in pro-Russia regions has left thousands dead and caused a humanitarian disaster in east Ukraine. Kiev launched its offensive in east in April 2014.
