Two people, including a police officer, are dead in the US state of Louisiana after a stabbing and shooting incident.
The suspect, identified as 35-year-old Harrison Lee Wiley, fatally shot a police officer after stabbing three women in the town of Sunset in southwestern Louisiana.
The incident happened at a domestic family dispute when 51-year-old officer Henry Nelson arrived at the home and was shot and killed, St. Landry Parish Sheriff Bobby Guidroz said.
One of the stabbing victims, 40-year-old Shameka Johnson, later died in hospital. Two other women were also stabbed, but survived the attack.
The assailant then fled by car to a convenient store where he drove through the front door and barricaded himself inside. Police say the suspect, who has an extensive criminal record, is now in custody.
In a separate act of gun violence on Wednesday, two television journalists were shot and killed in Virginia while broadcasting a live interview.
US President Barack Obama said he is heartbroken over the deaths and argued that Americans are overly focused on terrorism at a time when more deaths are being caused by gun violence.
"It breaks my heart every time you read about or hear about these kinds of incidents," Obama told ABC News in an interview that will air on Thursday.
"What we know is that the number of people who die from gun-related incidents around this country dwarfs any deaths that happen through terrorism," he said.
