Iran men's national junior volleyball team has continued to assert its dominance at the preliminary round of the 2015 FIVB Men's U23 World Championship in the United Arab Emirates, overcoming South Korea.
On Tuesday, the Iranian outfit beat the South Korean side 3-1 (22-25, 25-22, 25-17 and 25-22) in a Pool A fixture staged at Al Nasr Hall in Dubai.
Young South Korean volleyball players started the match energetically, and chalked up points before the Iranian squad reduced the deficit.
Both sides continued on a point-by-point basis shortly afterwards, before South Koreans presented good serves and attacks and went on earning points to finally close the set at 25-22.
The Persians returned to action, regaining their composure after the break. They won most of the points in their way to lead at the end of the second set 25-22. The Iranians extended their lead into the third set, and managed to beat the opposite side 25-17.
The Iranian outfit carried its momentum into the final set. Iranian sportsmen went on racking up points despite some fightback from South Korea, and clinched a 25-22 victory at last.
“My players were not alert enough in the first set, and allowed the strong South Korean team to enter the match as they were surprised by their quick rhythm. My team stayed under pressure throughout the first set, but they played their style afterwards to win the difficult match,” Iran’s coach Payman Akbari said after the match.
Iran's captain Pouria Fayyazi said, “We returned back to full concentration after the first set. We need to prove that Iranian volleyball is now one of the best all over the world. Now we have to look forwards to meet Cuba.”
“We committed a lot of mistakes after the great first set we played. I think the players were disturbed and were put under pressure throughout the three sets to lose due to that stress. We still have to work hard to qualify for the second round,” South Korea’s coach Hong Haechon stated.
Iran men's national junior volleyball team is scheduled to meet Cuba later on Wednesday.
Iran has been pitted against Cuba, Egypt, Italy, South Korea and the United Arab Emirates in Pool A of the preliminary round.
Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Russia, Tunisia and Turkey form Pool B.
The 2015 FIVB Volleyball Men's U23 World Championship opened in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates, on August 24 and will finish on August 31.
