Iranian and Russian foreign ministers are scheduled to meet in Moscow to discuss ways to boost bilateral ties between their countries in the wake of the recent agreement between Iran and the P5+1, Russian diplomatic sources say.
“Russian Foreign Minister [Sergei] Lavrov will hold negotiations with Iranian Foreign Minister [Mohammad Javad] Zarif in Moscow on Monday,” Interfax news agency quoted Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova as saying.
“The foreign ministers will focus on further development of bilateral relations, including in the light of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) on Iran’s nuclear program,” she went on to say.
Representatives and nuclear experts from Iran and the six world powers – the United States, Britain, France, Russia and China plus Germany – succeeded in finalizing the text of the JCPOA in the Austrian capital, Vienna, on July 14 after 18 days of intense negotiations and all-nighters that capped around 23 months of talks between Iran and the six other countries.
Russian Foreign Ministry Information and Press Department also announced in a statement that Zarif and Lavrov will address a number of key global and regional issues in their upcoming meeting, “including measures to overcome the crisis in Syria.”
Syria has been fighting against foreign-backed Takfiri terrorists since early 2011. The conflict has reportedly killed an estimated 240,000 people so far, including nearly 12,000 children.
The Iranian embassy in Moscow had earlier confirmed the visit, saying Zarif will discuss with his Russian counterpart “the entire spectrum of the issues related to the international and bilateral agendas,” Russia”s TASS news agency reported.
