Young Iranian Greco-Roman wrestlers win two medals

Young Iranian Greco-Roman wrestlers have exhibited admirable handgrip skills at the 2015 Junior Wrestling World Championships in Brazil to astound the spectators and snatch two medals, including one gold, in the international tournament.

On Tuesday and day one of the competitions in the city of Salvador, Reza Khedri downed his Georgian opponent Nugzari Tsurtsumia 2-1 in the last encounter of men’s 50-kg weight category and collected the gold medal.

Khedri, who had a bye in the first round, overpowered Turkish rival Hakan Murat 8-0 by a technical fall in his first contest.

He later routed Ukraine’s Oleksii Masyk 9-0 and Kazakh Greco-Roman wrestler Amangali Bekbolatov 9-0, each by technical fall, in his march to the final bout.

In the 96-kilogram category, Iran’s Amir Hossein Hosseini slumped to Georgian athlete Nikoloz Kakmelashvili 1-0 in the last competition to take home the silver medal.

Earlier in the day, Hosseini had a bye in the first round. He overcame Kevin Baumann from Estonia 5-3 in his first contest, and later beat Azerbaijan’s Soslan Fanziyev 4-0 in the quarterfinal round. He drew 2-2 with the Russian wrestler Murat Lokyaev in the semifinal, yet qualified for the final bout.

The 2015 Junior World Championships started in the Brazilian city of Salvador on August 11, and will run until August 16.

Wrestlers from various countries, including Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bulgaria, Brazil, Georgia, Hungary, Iran, Japan, Kazakhstan, Russia, Turkey and Ukraine, have taken part in the tournament.

While male Greco-Roman wrestlers have vied in the 50-kilogram, 55-kilogram, 60-kilogram, 66-kilogram, 74-kilogram, 84-kilogram, 96-kilogram and 120-kilogram weight categories on August 11 and 12, female athletes will compete on August 13 and 14 to clinch a medal in the 44-kilogram, 48-kilogram, 50-kilogram, 55-kilogram, 59-kilogram, 63-kilogram, 67-kilogram and 72-kilogram sections.

Male freestyle wrestlers will be in action in the 50-kilogram, 55-kilogram, 60-kilogram, 66-kilogram, 74-kilogram, 84-kilogram, 96-kilogram and 120-kilogram weight divisions on August 15 and 16.
