Damascus slams Saudi foreign minister’s anti-Syria stance

The Syrian Foreign Ministry has strongly condemned the hostile stance of the Saudi foreign minister on the state of affairs in Syria.

An unnamed source at the Syrian Foreign Ministry said in a statement to Syria's official news agency, SANA, on Tuesday that the Saudi regime lacks any constitutional legitimacy and that Saudi authorities’ hands are stained with the blood of Syrians. The source said Saudi officials should be the last to talk about legitimacy,

The Syrian source also said the roots of the Daesh terrorist group are in Saudi Arabia, adding that Riyadh and the Takfiri group share the mentality and practices of beheading, dismemberment, and flogging in the name of Islam.

The remarks by the Syrian source came after Adel al-Jubeir, the Saudi foreign minister, answering a proposal by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on the cooperation between Saudi Arabia and the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to fight Daesh, said Riyadh will never work with Assad.

"As for a coalition in which Saudi Arabia would participate with the government of Syria, then we need to exclude that," Jubeir said, adding, "Our position has not changed... there is no place for Assad in the future of Syria."

"We think that Bashar al-Assad is part of the problem, not part of the solution," the Saudi foreign minister added.

The Syrian source also referred to the support Riyadh provides for the Takfiri group, saying that Saudi Arabia’s backing of terrorism constitutes a serious threat to regional and international security.

The source said Saudi Arabia is the cause and origin of the state of breakdown, division, fatigue, and systematic vandalism affecting the region, adding that it is imperative to put an end to the destructive behavior of the Saudi regime.

The source also emphasized that the Syrian people and army are resolved to defeat the Saudi-backed terrorists, saying that the Damascus government is the defender of the interests of the Syrian nation.

Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Qatar are widely accused of being the main regional supporters of militants operating against the Syrian government in more than four years of turmoil in Syria that has reportedly killed an estimated 240,000 people, including nearly 12,000 children.
