Iran, Pakistan to discuss ties, nuclear issue

Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif

Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif is scheduled to hold talks with senior Pakistani officials in Islamabad on ways to boost mutual ties and a nuclear agreement between Iran and the P5+1 group of countries.

Iranian Ambassador to Islamabad Alireza Haqiqian told IRNA that Zarif would arrive in Pakistan on Thursday as part of his second regional tour.

“During his day-long visit to Islamabad, Zarif will meet his Pakistani counterpart Sartaj Aziz and the country’s Prime Minister Mohammad Nawaz Sharif,” he said.

The ranking Iranian diplomat would also sit down with Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, the speaker of the National Assembly of Pakistan, and chairman of the Senate Mian Raza Rabbani, the diplomat noted.

Haqiqian said the Iranian and Pakistani foreign ministers would attend a joint press conference.

The Iranian foreign minister arrived in the Lebanese capital of Beirut at the head of a delegation on Tuesday on the first leg of his second regional tour following the nuclear agreement between Iran and six world powers.

Zarif will fly to Syria on Wednesday before leaving for Pakistan, India and Russia in the following days.

On July 14, Iran and the P5+1 countries finalized the text of the nuclear agreement, dubbed the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), in Vienna.

Under the JCPOA, limits will be put on Iran’s nuclear activities in exchange for, among other things, the removal of all economic and financial bans against the Islamic Republic.
