Iran, Spain sign agreement on renewable energy

Iran and Spain have agreed to have technical cooperation on designing and manufacturing equipment related to solar energy systems and renewable energies.

Iran’s Sunir company and Spain’s company Bester signed a cooperation agreement on Monday.

The two sides agreed to launch regional and international projects as part of efforts to preserve the environment via using renewable energy sources, IRNA reported.

Under the new contract, the two companies will have technical cooperation for 18 months. The Spanish company will work with the Iranian firm as a consulting company. It will later operate as an investor in joint renewable energy projects with Sunir company.

The contract is aimed at transferring the technology of producing renewable energy equipment to Iran.

Spain seeks to gain solar generating capacity of 10,000 megawatts (MW) by 2020.

Spain is one of the countries pioneering in the development of solar energy. It is the fourth largest manufacturer of solar power systems in the world.

Given its long hours of sunshine, the country seeks to gain solar generating capacity of 10,000 megawatts (MW) by 2020.

Meanwhile, Iranian officials have already unveiled comprehensive plans for the production of 5,000 megawatts (MW) of electricity using renewable energy sources by 2018.

Iran enjoys enormous potential for the production of different kinds of renewable energies, including geothermal, solar and wind power.

Back in January, a senior Iranian energy official announced that Iran seeks to double the capacity of its renewable energy.

Homayoun Haeri, director of Iran’s Power Generation and Transmission Company (TAVANIR), said that special plans have already been launched to boost wind and solar power generation across the country.

Iran currently generates 10,000 MW of electricity from hydropower plants. The country seeks to gradually shift its energy consumption toward renewable resources

Due to its geographical position, Iran enjoys enormous potential for the production of different kinds of renewable energies, including geothermal, solar and wind power.
