Does Congress want a war with Iran? US presidential candidate asks
US presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders has warned about the consequences of not completing a nuclear agreement with Iran ahead of Congress vote on the accord next month.
“The alternative of not reaching an agreement, you know what it is?” he said in an interview with CBS on Sunday. “It’s war.”
“Do we really want another war, a war with Iran? An asymmetrical warfare that will take place all over this world, threaten American troops?” the Democratic presidential candidate asked.
After the conclusion of nuclear negotiations between Iran, the US, and its five partners in Vienna last month, Congress is scheduled to vote on the agreement in September.
Republican lawmakers have expressed their opposition to the deal, but President Barack Obama is hopeful that his fellow Democratic allies in both chambers support him.
Sanders also criticized Obama’s critics for expecting a perfect agreement.
“Look, I’m not going to tell you that this is a perfect agreement,” the Vermont lawmaker said.
“It’s so easy to be critical of an agreement which is not perfect,” he said. “And every agreement can be better.”
On Friday, US Secretary of State John Kerry also slammed Democratic Senator Charles Schumer for deciding to vote against the conclusion of Iran nuclear talks, suggesting it would only pave the way for military option.
Kerry said that rejecting the July 14 accord "will lead people to put pressure on military action, since the United States would have walked away from the diplomatic solution."
During a speech at American University last week, President Obama said those “who call for a 'better deal' are ignorant of the Iranian society or just not being straight with the American people.”
“Let's not mince words: the choice we face is ultimately between diplomacy or some form of war,” Obama said. “Wars in general, wars in the Middle East in particular, are anything but simple; only certainty is human suffering.”
