ISIL terrorists have managed to capture a key town in the central Homs province, a UK-based monitoring group says.
The militants “seized al-Qaryatain town in the southeastern countryside of Homs after violent clashes” with Syrian soldiers, Rami Abdel Rahman, the head of the so-called Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, told AFP Thursday.
ISIL’s invasion started after three Takfiri bombers targeted checkpoints manned by Syrian soldiers at entrances to the city early on Wednesday.
In the ensuing clashes that led to the fall of the city, a total of 37 soldiers lost their lives while 23 militants were killed.
"The control of al-Qaryatain allows ISIL to link the areas under its control in the eastern countryside of Homs with the areas under its control in the eastern countryside of Qalamoun, and allows it to transfer fighters and supplies between the two regions," Abdel Rahman said.
The Syrian army is engaged in battles with the Takfris in several fronts across the country.
The soldiers, fighting for the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, have managed to push the terrorists out of many areas.
Syrian army soldiers and fighters of the Lebanese resistance movement Hezbollah purged the Takfiri militants from the Hay al-Za’atoot neighborhood of the southwestern city of Zabadani, Syria’s official SANA news agency reported Wednesday.
Syria has been facing a massive foreign-sponsored militancy for the past four years, which has reportedly killed an estimated 230,000 people so far.
