Israeli tanks have violated a 2014 truce agreement with the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas, carrying out a limited incursion into the besieged Gaza Strip.
The Israeli military vehicles crossed over Gaza’s southeastern border Tuesday and advanced about 150 meters into the border town of Qarara, local residents said.
According to the Palestinian Information Center, eyewitnesses saw five vehicles with the Israeli insignia entering Qarar, which is located nearly four kilometers (about 2.5 miles) northeast of the city of Khan Yunis.
The incursion came despite a ceasefire agreement between Hamas and the Tel Aviv regime. The truce in the summer of 2014 came after nearly two months of Israeli war on Gaza, which saw more than 2,300 Palestinians killed.
According to the Egyptian-brokered deal, Israelis must observe the armistice line while they should also respect the fishing zone for Gaza fishermen in the Mediterranean. Israel was also expected to ease restrictions on the import of aid and construction materials into the besieged enclave.
However, ruins of homes devastated during the Israeli offensive is visible everywhere in Gaza with international organizations like the United Nations saying that Israel is not willing to meet the obligations stipulated in the agreement.
Since 2007, Israel maintains its land, air and sea blockade on more than 1.8 million people living in Gaza, denying them the most basic items like food, medicine and fuel. Palestinian sources said the limited incursion on Tuesday was not a new development as the Tel Aviv regime forces routinely enter the Gaza territory in violation of the truce agreement.
