A military plane has crashed in northern Colombia, killing all 11 personnel on board.

In a Twitter message, Colombia’s President Juan Manuel Santos said the transport plane signaled that it was experiencing engine problems before the accident on Friday.

He expressed regret over the “terrible plane accident” and offered condolences to the families of “heroes” who lost their lives.

"My heart is heavy with pain for the loss of these heroes who in fulfillment of their constitutional mandate have now flown much higher to join the heavenly squadron alongside the almighty," the president said in brief remarks.

Meanwhile, the commander of Colombia’s air force, General Carlos Bueno, also said the twin-engine CASA-235 transport plane reported a motor problem before it disappeared.

He added that the aircraft’s wreckage was found on a ranch in the northern province of Cesar.

Bueno noted that an investigation was underway, but found no clues yet about the cause of the motor failure.

Four air force officers were among the dead.

The crash occurred in Las Palomas region of Cesar, some 800 kilometers (500 miles) northeast of the Colombian capital of Bogota.
