At least 14 people have been killed and 47 others wounded in a bomb attack at a busy market in northeastern Nigeria, the latest in a string of deadly attacks in the violence-hit country.

According to witnesses and hospital sources, the blast occurred on Sunday at 9:50 a.m. (0850 GMT) in the Nigerian town of Damaturu, the capital of Yobe State.

Market trader Garba Abdullahi said the attack took place when a female assailant blew her explosives “at the... entrance of the market where commuters were arriving.”

He added that 15 dead bodies, including that of the bomber, were taken to the hospital, describing the attacker “as a mentally unstable woman that had been known for years in the area.”

Meanwhile, an unnamed nurse from the Sani Abacha Specialist Hospital confirmed the death toll, saying, “We have received 15 dead bodies and 47 people with injuries from the market blast site. Eight of the dead are women.” She added that most of the injuries are serious.

Earlier this month, a triple bombing in Damaturu took at least 13 lives as residents prepared for Eid al-Fitr, marking the end of the holy Muslim fasting month of Ramadan.

Yobe State, along with the northeastern states of Borno and Adamawa, has been the scene of a deadly campaign by the Takfiri Boko Haram militants.

Boko Haram has claimed responsibility for most deadly shooting attacks and bombings in Nigeria since the beginning of its activities in 2009.

The group’s deadly militancy has so far killed more than 15,000 people and left over 1.5 million others homeless.

The Takfiri group has pledged allegiance to the ISIL terrorist group, which mainly operates in Syria and Iraq. The Nigerian militant group has intensified its campaign of terror since President Mohammadu Buhari came to power in May.
