Report says Russian nuclear bombers flew near US

This US Navy file photo shows a F-18 Hornet strike fighter intercepts a Russian Tu-95 Bear bomber.

American defense officials say two Russian nuclear bombers flew near the California coast in a threatening way earlier this month, according to a report.

The Washington Free Bacon reported on Wednesday that incident happened during the Fourth of July aerial event.

The unnamed officials claimed that one pilot of a Russian Tu-95 Bear bomber said, “Good morning American pilots, we are here to greet you on your Fourth of July Independence Day.”

The Colorado-based US Northern Command also confirmed the incident this week.

Two US F-15 jets intercepted the Russian bombers on July 4 as the bombers flew within 39 miles of the coast of Mendocino County, north of San Francisco, according to the command.

One American official claimed one of the Russian pilots issued a warning in a radio message.

The Russians conducted another bomber flights on the Fourth of July holiday in 2012, the Washington Free Bacon reported.

Relations between Washington and Moscow have plunged to a post-Cold War low since the deadly crisis in Ukraine in 2014.

The US has accused Russia of destabilizing Ukraine by supporting pro-Russian forces fighting in the eastern parts of the country.

US experts on Russia have said the growing crisis in Ukraine, which has already taken thousands of lives, could explode to a much wider conflict.
